This month, AAFS recognized Representative Adbelnasser Rashid and Senator Bill Cunningham as champions for Arab Americans in Illinois. These elected officials each secured $250,000 in the 2024-2025 state budget for services that benefit our community. AAFS Executive Directors Itedal Shalabi and Nareman Taha delivered certificates of recognition to Rashid and Cunningham, thanking them for their service!

AAFS recognized Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in July with a presentation by Dr. Leticia Villarr on Mental Health Awareness in the Arab American Community. Dr. Villarr discussed challenges Arab Americans face due to racism and discrimination, an invisible or hyper-visible identity, and the tremendous trauma created by the war in Gaza.
