Immigration, ESL and Civics

Arab American Family Services  firmly believes that an educated citizen will significantly contribute to the general welfare of the country. By acquiring citizenship and exercising their right to vote, Arab and Muslim immigrants can actively participate in the democratic process and enjoy the best of what their new country has to offer. English Second Language (ESL) Classes

AAFS is proud to offer free English classes. Knowing English empowers immigrants to excel at work, to communicate clearly in healthcare settings, and to better understand everyday life in the U.S. There are two teachers on staff, and as of 2024, 350 students were enrolled in English courses. Each English class meets twice per week for two hours. There are three different levels, with 20-25 students in each class. Additionally, AAFS offers one-on-one English tutoring to students who seek additional help.

Civics Courses for Citizenship Test

AAFS also offers classes to prepare immigrants to pass the civic tests required to become a U.S. citizen. The civics curriculum involves practice tests, and mock interviews. AAFS is proud of our many graduates, for passing their civics test and becoming U.S. Citizens. We’re happy to assist with voter registration as well.

Needs-Based Temporary Programs: Migrant Shelters

Between December 2023 – 2024 AAFS was contracted under the Illinois Welcoming Center and partnering with Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, to serve the migrant population from Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador. The Southern Border Arrivals (SBA) program helps the huge influx of migrants in Chicago, which as of July 2024 reached a population of 43,000. AAFS caseworkers are present in the shelter three times per week, and provide on-the-ground support in migrant shelters, including in-take, helping people apply for housing assistance, food stamps, work permits and other immediate needs.
