“Empowering Parents, Enhancing Education”
Since 2019, AAFS has been proud to offer a transformative Parent Mentor Program, serving families with pre-school to elementary-age children. In partnership with the Parent Engagement Institute, we provide a supportive framework for parents to volunteer in their child’s school, fostering a deeper connection with their child’s education. Before their classroom placement, parents undergo intensive training with AAFS, equipping them with the skills and confidence to succeed.
In addition to volunteering 2 hours per day, 4 days per week, parents also participate in weekly professional development workshops, further enhancing their skills and knowledge. Mentors receive a stipend once they complete 100 volunteering hours, which serves as a well-deserved recognition of their dedication and hard work.
Our program offers a unique opportunity for parents to gain valuable experience, build confidence, and develop leadership skills. We believe that every parent can be a positive force in their child’s education, regardless of their formal education or work experience. The impact of our program is profound. Not only do parents become more engaged and effective advocates for their children, but they also develop lasting relationships with teachers and fellow parents.
Many of our parent mentors have gone on to secure employment with the school district, pursue higher education opportunities, become local school board members, and join school committees. This is a testament to the program’s success in building skills and confidence and transforming the trajectory of our parent mentors’ lives.
To celebrate the end of the program and its incredible impact on our community, we join forces with organizations from across the state at the annual state convention hosted by the Parent Engagement Institute. This inspiring event brings together hundreds of dedicated individuals to celebrate, empower, and learn from each other.
During the 2023-2024 school year, we were thrilled to have 39 parents participate in the program. The previous school year, 28 dedicated parent mentors participated with AAFS. We are proud to partner with five local schools: Harnew, Sorrick, Sward, Lieb, and Glen Oaks.
