Arab American Family Services was proud to take part in he 20th Annual International Summit and Training on Violence, Abuse and Trauma hosted in San Diego from August 22 through the 26th.
The conference tracks adult survivors of domestic violence, child maltreatment, adverse childhood experiences, legal and criminal justice issues, as well as other issues related to domestic violence.
AAFS’s role was profound. In 2014, DePaul university contacted Arab American Family Services and asked them to be part of a study conducted by the social work department. The study is titled “Arab Women and Domestic Violence: Implications for Practice and Cultural Awareness”
For the study, DePaul asked to interview 25 domestic violent survivors from the Arab American Community. They were asked questions such as how long did they deal with domestic violence, the types of domestic violence they experienced and how the community and police handled their situations. Most of all, the study wanted to see how AAFS handled the situation at hand.
The study showed that the role AAFS played in the lives of survivors of domestic violence was profound. AAFS assisted with crisis intervention, safety planning, court advocacy and counseling. They also offered financial, educational and employment assistance.
The presentation was effective and the study results were great.
AAFS encourages anyone who is a victim of domestic violence to step forward and not be afraid to ask for help. We will be there to assist you and your family during this time of need.
