The stories that walk through the doors of Arab American Family Services are the ones that will stay with us for the rest of our lives.
Several days ago, a disable client came into our Elderly Services department. She was severely depressed, lonely and did not want to talk. She was so stern, uptight, and very agitated. As we approached her and asked her how she was doing, she gave us strange looks as if she was insulted by the question. As she sat at the desk, we tried not to make her feel uncomfortable.
One caseworker, Wafa Zegar, kept calm and collect, as she proceeded to help the client with her CEDA application. While filling out the information, she noticed it was the client’s birthday. Zegar happily and excitedly yelled out “Happy Birthday!”
All of a sudden, that stiff face started to change into a smile and tears rolling down her face. Zegar was apologetic and asked her if she was ok. The past few years have been rough for the client, having no contact with family or friends, battling illness and many bumps along the road.
Being so touched by her story, the staff of AAFS provided her with more help than she had originally come in for. We gave her more resources, educated her and informed her about many benefits that she can utilize. She told me that no one showed the genuine compassion as this agency and myself has she ever visited else where.
She stated that she truly felt like she was being treated as a human being rather than a nobody. This client’s past was truly remarkable. She had been highly educated, had a wonderful career and many wonderful possessions.
Unfortunately, after becoming ill, she lost her job, exerted her unemployment benefits and ended up on the verge of losing her home.
She touched our heart and gave us all a big hug. She thanked us for not judging her and told us that just listening to her vent made all the difference throughout her visit.
She said other organizations were quick to rush her through her appointment, making her feel like she hated herself.
At AAFS, we strive to always be humble to our clientele. Sometimes, just listening to them makes a world of a difference. As the client stated, to be treated like a human being, is what its all about.
