August: The Month in Review

The month of August brought many wonderful events to Arab American Family Services. As we watched the summer wind down before our eyes, AAFS was busy making sure that every student gearing up for the new school year did so with a new book back and school supplies to help them strive for success.
Over 35 back to school back packs and book supplies were given to low-income families, as well as single mothers and fathers who needed a helping hand to ensure their child’s success. Thirteen families will be able to send their children back to school, knowing they are ready to tackle the new year!
The new school year also means that the AAFS tutoring program is back in full swing. We are urging families who’s children may need assistance in homework to sign up for the Student Tutoring Program. These classes can serve as early interventions for children who can tackle learning problems early on and make the school year and every school year a success. Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Bridgeview Community Center on 7900 S. Oketo. Volunteers are always welcome to help give a child the gift of knowledge and success. Anyone interested in signing up, or volunteering as a tutor can call AAFS.
With registration opening up for English as a Second Language classes and the number of participants, we have chosen a bigger location to accommodate students. Classes will be held at the Bridgeview Community Center located on 7900 S. Oketo Ave. in Bridgeview. Classes will be offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On Mondays and Wednesdays classes will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, classes will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday classes which will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
In support of Senate Bill 957, which allows non-visa status individuals to obtain a temporary visitor driver’s license, AAFS will now be assisting those who need to apply for a TVDL. If you need help applying for a TVDL, please give us a call, or stop by our office.
In preparing for the Chicago Marathon, AAFS staff member Fatimeh Hussien has decided to run the 26.2 miles in support of domestic violence awareness and prevention. In collaboration with the Battered Women’s Network, AAFS has teamed up to “Run Domestic Violence Out of Town.” Hussien’s goal is to raise at least $1,500 to help support programs that help victims of domestic violence.
And we are reminding everyone that on Saturday, Oct. 11, AAFS will be hosting their 7th annual Domestic Violence and Cancer Awareness Walk. The walk will take place at Lake Katherine Nature Center on 7402 Lake Katherine Drive in Palos Heights, IL 60463 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Registration fees are $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 10 and under.
