On Friday, Feb. 14, the team of Arab American Family Services met with leaders from the Chicago Commission on Human Relations to get an in depth look on how to combat discrimination.
There are many different forms of discrimination, ranging from age, race, religion, ancestry, disability or source of income, to name a few. Discrimination can take place in the work place, or your neighborhood. Many have experienced discrimination when it comes to renting an apartment, or getting a job.
Some people face sexual harassment, another form of discrimination, while in the workplace.
The members of AAFS were given the knowledge and information on where to refer their clients, in the event that clients felt they have been discriminated against.
Many Arabs and Muslims are unaware of the fact that there are organizations that help combat discrimination. Some think their voices will not be heard and that they should suffer in silence.
But with organizations such as the Commission on Human Relations, which handles complaints in the city of Chicago and throughout the state of Illinois, constituents have the ability to voice their concerns and speak up against discrimination.
