AAFS in support of ICIRR Advocacy Day
(SPRINGFIELD, IL —March 15, 2017) Arab American Family Services traveled to our State Capital in Springfield, IL, today! AAFS was one of the 30 plus member organizations taking part in Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) Advocacy Day. MCing this event was our very own Director, Nareman Taha. As hundreds of leaders and supporters joined them at the State Capitol, they demanded elected officials dig deeper to better understand the Campaign for a Welcoming Illinois, so that they can support the immigrant, refugee and labor bills that make up the campaign.
Participants were given the opportunity to speak to their legislators regarding the Illinois Trust Act (HB 3099), The Immigrant Safe Zones Act (HB 426), The Student Access Bill (SB 2196), and the Automatic Voter Registration Bill (SB 250).
AAFS and all the great leaders and organizations in attendance were able to exchange dialogue and come together as a community to stand up for humanity. In order to create change, we must reach out to our elected officials and stand up for our concerns. Change starts with us. We mustn’t forget that.
