"Heartbeats: The Izzat Project" Kicks of their Tour

Arab American Family Services is proud to support the book tour of “Heartbeats: The Izzat Project.
This is a beautiful graphic novel in which six young South Asian women used illustration, writing and theater to explore and share community stories about resilience in the face of violence. In Canada, the comic book has already opened conversations in communities, challenging the way in which the concept of “honor” has been used against women to rationalize control, abuse and violence. It has also been presented to educational institutions and policy makers to help frame the issues of forced marriage in Canada. By bringing Heartbeats to the United States and promoting it through a six-city book tour, our hope is to increase public awareness and discourse about the issue of forced marriage in communities throughout the country. In each city the Tahirih Justice Center, along with the Pomegranate Tree Group and our local partners, will present a Multimedia Performance and Community Forum, a Forced Marriage Training Workshop for Service Providers, and a Forced Marriage Issue Briefing.”
