Voters Support Major Amendment to Domestic Violence Bill of Rights

Voters across Illinois stood together to change a law and the way it effects victims and family members of domestic violence. The choice to vote in favor of the amendment to change the Illinois Crime Victims’ Bill of Rights means an expansion to certain rights already granted to crime victims in the state and would give victims the ability to enforce their rights in court. Some of the key amendments include the right to be free from harassment and intimidation, and the right to know and request a hearing if the victim’s information is being used in court proceedings.
With the passing of the amendments, victims will now be told in a timely fashion of all court proceedings.
Victims have the ability to speak in court when their rights are involved, along with situations pertaining to the defendant’s release, plea or sentencing.
At Arab American Family Services, we are proud to have a domestic violence department that is well informed of the laws of the state and the rights of victims and their families.
“What I love most about being a domestic violence advocate is seeing how the small things I do such as listening to my client and empowering her to think and make better decisions for herself and her family,” said Ibtessan Asfour, domestic violence caseworker at AAFS.
“One of the greatest moments is when my client’s face lights up and transforms from the darkness of her tears to the light of a smile when they realize that they are supported and there is so much can be done by them to survive their abuse,” she said.
At AAFS, there are so many options we offer victims of domestic violence. If you or someone you know would benefit from our domestic violence intervention and prevention department, please do not hesitate to give us a call at (708) 599-2237.
