AAFS: Breaking Down the Stereotypes One Client at a Time

At Arab American Family Services, we are an organization that welcomes everyone who walks through our doors. We welcome people from all walks of life. Recently, a Caucasian client came in for assistance. As we were assisting him with his CEDA application, he had informed us that he had never been in contact with a Muslim woman or the Arab-American community. He had no knowledge of the religion or culture, other than what he saw on the news, which was filled with negative stereotypes.
He was apprehensive at first and admit that he was even a little afraid to be at the office. Needless to say,  the gentleman was with our caseworker for over two hours. He said he was impressed with our thorough assessment and providing him with information that he never had known before.  He was also admiring our friendly customer service and helpfulness to our clientele.  He became at ease, started to joke around and actually scheduled another appointment to return for more services.
We felt this broke the barriers and misconceptions that many have about the Arab-American community.  This man left with a big smile on his face and a positive attitude. And that is what makes our job worth while!
