At Arab American Family Services, the client we serve come from various walks of life. One client we will always remember is a 35-year-old widowed mother of 3 who had refugee status. This client had fallen on terrible times and had found herself homeless and living in city parks.
AAFS had learned from her situation from a source and knew that an intervention was a necessity. Through funding from Islamic Relief, AAFS was able to assist the client and her children with an apartment and furniture.
During the transition process, the client was assisted in applying for all public benefits that she and her children qualify for. The client was assisted by AAFS in registering her daughter and sons into the appropriate schools, as they never attended school throughout the duration of their homelessness. AAFS helped that family obtain Identification Cards for everyone in the family.
At the same time, the client also needed assistance with her legal documents (Permanent Resident Card) for her and her children. During the process, she was provided with monetary provided through Islamic Relief, food and clothes.
Through the AAFS referral system, the client was able to receive further assistance for rent, food and medical attention. The family was also placed on the Food, Eid and Back to School Drives to ensure that they continuously receive all the help that is available through AAFS.
Till this day the client continues to remain a part of AAFS and seek assistance through the many services we provide, and we would not want it any other way. We are thankful to Islamic Relief in lending a hand to help alleviate this difficult situation.
