AAFS Intervenes With Help in One Family's Crisis

Months ago, a 25-year-old woman walked into Arab American Family Services. She was sad and devastated. Her and her young family had hit a rough patch. She is the mother of two young children, ages 1 and 5. Seemingly upset, she was taken in by a caseworker who took the time to listen to her needs. The client’s husband recently had his hours cut at work. Unable to make ends meet, the family was living under the poverty level. Worst of all, the 1-year-old was sick and fear of medical bills mounting, was unable to seek medical attention. She felt helpless with no solution.
At AAFS, she found people who cared, people who listened, people who wanted to see good done to her and her family.
They were able to help the family apply for the Medical Card to help get her daughter the necessary tests and treatments, they were also able to apply for Food Stamp benefits as well as CEDA: Low Income Energy Assistance Program to help subsidize the cost of growing utility bills.
Recently, the client updated us on her current situation. They were able to receive all the benefits they applied for and her daughter was able to get the medical attention she required. Her family’s financial situation is improving and they are starting to save money for the first time in years.
The client said if it was not for the help of AAFS during the family crisis, they would not know where they would be today.
If you or someone you know is struggling and can possibly benefit from the services offered by AAFS, please do not hesitate to give us a call at (708) 599-2237.
